Protecting Our Home and Family from Insects

By Andy Maingam Our home has always been invaded by ants. If it’s not black ants it’s red ants and when the ants are away, we seem to get the flies, bees and wasps causing a menace. Oh, and let’s not forget the cockroaches, which to me are the rats of the insect world. These indestructible vermin have been seen of a late evening scurrying across the kitchen floor. This year has been particularly bad and so we decided to do check out our options at controlling these unwanted guests once and for all. Knowing that millions of homes across the country suffer the same fate does little to help when it is you that’s getting bitten, harassed or frightened on a daily basis. Although bugs such as the harmless house spider are safe and relatively clean, this is not the case with all our summer gate crashers. Ants can and do bite, and when it’s hot, these nasty little stings seem to linger on forever. Flying insects such as common flies are nothing short of filthy and can contaminate any uncovered foods if you’re careless. But it’s the other flying fighters that scare the wits out of me. We have bees, as in killer bees! Wasps can pack one heck of a painful jab too, and as for mosquitoes, well, depending on where in the world you come from, these lightweights can really carry some malicious parasites around with, them which can prove lethal if they find their way into your blood stream. Anyhow, we sought some professional advice from a pest control agent. After he fumigated our house he passed on some really simple yet valuable tips which I’ve included below: Keep all food covered or put away at all times, and that includes the fruit bowl. Kids are always prone to grab an apple or handful of grapes and eat them without giving washing a second thought. But apart from the obvious, if there’s nothing to eat, the pests are discouraged. At the end of the day, most insects are looking for grub and that includes cockroaches. Check and clean under washing machines, fridges, and ovens. You could be surprised what you find. Make sure you clean up as you go along. It’s too easy to grab a sandwich and think about cleaning up the tops a little later. In the middle of summer, just 30 minutes or less of fresh food lying around is enough to have your house invaded by armies of ants, flies and the like. Also check and recheck that there is no food dropped onto the floors as this is where the cockroaches love to scavenge. Once those critters start breeding you’ll most likely need to call the professionals in to finish them off. If you have animals, make sure their eating bowls are cleaned or covered up after meal times. Cats especially tend to leave half eaten food in their dish and this is very attractive to flies and the like. Rinse and repair any broken or slow moving gutters and pipes. Many insects are drawn to damp or moist areas, and could lay their eggs in such places. Also check the outside of your home for small apertures or cracks that the bigger pests may be able to slip though at night. I think we’ve all seen big bugs in the house and not known quite how they got in. Quite often it is though these cracks in the wall, or side of a door, and unless you find them, they’ll just keep on coming. So the bottom line is to remove what attracts them, which is mainly food, water, and access. Even if they do get in, and they will, they shouldn’t hang around for too long if the environment is unsuitable for them. Kokoro no Kaze: Does Your Soul Have a Cold?

By Maya Talisman Frost Feeling sad? Have you lost interest in things you used to enjoy? Perhaps you’re suffering from a cold of the soul. That’s the concept that has taken Japan by storm in the last five years, thanks to a culturally savvy marketing campaign launched by pharmaceutical companies to turn mild depression into an acceptable malady that a simple prescription can cure. Anyone familiar with Japan will recognize that “kokoro no kaze” (literally “cold of the soul”) is a phrase guaranteed to resonate with the citizens of that country. Preventing and treating colds is practically a national pastime there. Everywhere in Japan, you see people wearing gauzy surgical-style masks covering their nose and mouth. Although some may be wearing the masks to protect themselves from the latest bug, the majority of wearers are simply being courteous. In a nation lauded for its complex culture of politeness, the Japanese wear masks when they come down with a cold as a polite way of warning and protecting others. In Japan, your dentist and dental assistants are likely to wear masks–not to protect themselves from your mouth breathing, but to provide a polite barrier so that you won’t be inadvertently subjected to their germs or the lingering odor of their sushi lunch. Catching a cold in Japan is an opportunity to practice concern for others. How brilliant, then, that pharmaceutical companies have developed this new phrase to describe the symptoms of mild depression. Now, Japanese businessmen, housewives and students are running to their doctors in droves to get prescriptions for antidepressants. In a culture steeped in politeness, it seems that the same folks likely to cover their noses and mouths to protect others from germs are recognizing their obligation to protect their loved ones from their melancholy. After living in Japan for five years and having a Japanese sister-in-law and four beloved bicultural nieces and nephews, I have a great fondness for that country. That’s why I am saddened by this new need to treat mild depression with drugs. I’m all for turning to pharmaceuticals to help those who are severely depressed. I’ve lost two brothers to suicide, and even the worst drug on the market is better than that outcome. Crown Princess Masako, a Harvard grad who surprised the world by agreeing to marry Crown Prince Hirohito and live behind the closed doors of the Emperor’s Palace, prompted a national debate on depression when it was announced recently that she was undergoing treatment for the disease. Though it doesn’t surprise us that the life of a princess and its accompanying expectations to bear heirs might be difficult to handle–we all watched the sad story of Princess Diana unfold–this is an unprecedented admission in Japan. The fact that the Imperial Family has publicly acknowledged Masako’s struggles will have a profound impact on the ongoing discussion of depression in a nation known for its suicide rate. Preventing suicide? Good. Taking drugs for mild depression? Not always so good. Does life in “advanced” countries like Japan create stress, frustration and sadness? You bet. Should a culture be treated, en masse, by drugs? I have to question that. The me-too mentality is all too prevalent in a nation that prides itself on this phrase: “The nail that sticks up gets hammered down.” I hate to think of millions of Japanese taking drugs in order to deal with the expectations of their culture. I hate to think of ANYONE taking drugs for that reason. And yet, it’s becoming a remarkably common practice around the world. Our folk wisdom tells us, “Feed a cold, starve a fever.” Traditional remedies may help a cold of the soul as well. We don’t run to the clinic every time we develop an itchy throat. We drink tea, take vitamins, get plenty of rest–in other words, we take care of ourselves. Shouldn’t we try boosting our soul’s immune system first before choosing a pharmaceutical solution? Recognizing sadness or dissatisfaction is positive. Dealing with the pieces of your life that aren’t fitting together is powerful and rewarding. Making decisions to improve your relationships or circumstances is empowering. Understanding our role as growing, changing humans and applying mindfulness to our greatest challenges strengthens and elevates us. It feeds our soul. Is it easy? No. Is it healthy? Yes. And letting our loved ones know of our struggle and our optimistic determination to work through it? Priceless. Face mask, anyone? Lantern Festival - Celebration for Some, Torture for Some

By Rajesh Kanoi My university, here in Huainan, that has looked so deserted for the past few weeks has started showing some signs of life. The odd student has started returning and there is certainly more activity here than in the last few weeks. The early birds here are the ones looking for their worms of love. Apparently, unable to bear the long Spring Festival-induced separation, they have come back to school sooner than necessary - sooner than necessary as per the school’s diktats but perhaps, less sooner than the necessity imposed by nature. Which means, they have borne the festivities with some sort of stoicism. Spring Festival is the time when reunions are de rigeur for families. But lovers do not qualify as family and so they must make do with a period of segregation. They walk now, hand-in-hand, arm-in-arm, smiles on their faces, homes and hearths forgotten in the fire of love. Lantern Festival! Today, the fifteenth day of the Spring Festival, a full moon day, is the Lantern Festival when people remember their ancestors, if I recall rightly. After today, this year’s Spring Festival will be consigned to the caves in the minds of the people and the hearts of lovers. Some will remember it with fondness and others, perhaps, with a little less, depending on what the festival gave or took from them. The streets this morning are deserted. The morning was noisy though, with firecrackers rousing me from my tossing-turning sleep well before fingers of light could brighten the horizon. Xia Wu Fandian (Afternoon Restaurant, if my translation skills are any good), my head-office as I refer to it since most of my meals and drinking are ‘accomplished’ there, was crowded. I walked on to see more of the festivities. All I saw was unenforced curfew - or, perhaps, a curfew enforced by tradition. I imagined people sitting to a lavish spread with their ones at home, leaving the streets to be trawled by the homeless and the foreigners, perhaps, equally homeless in some sense. I returned an hour later and the restaurant was as deserted as the streets and I sat down to my small measure of baijiu (white wine) appetizer and cabbage with fried and diced pieces of doufu (tofu, beancurd) and a bowl of rice to go with it. It tasted good, as usual. It’s a dish created by a student’s (Chris’s) pretty girl firend, Peace. She directed the restaurant’s owner-cum-chef on how to prepare it and it has become a hit with me and a few others I have taken with me to sample the dish. While I waited, I asked the owner’s mother, who helps clean and wash the dishes there, where the lao ban niang (mistress of the establishment) was. ‘Mama’, a genial old lady, with an ever smiling face and busy hands, signalled that she was at home in bed. Why, I asked. She indicated that he, her son the lao ban, (the boss) had beaten her. I am about to call him and ask why he did that, forgetting for a moment, that men have been beatiing their wives for thousands of years, not only in China, India or Asia but all over the world. Thankfully, most women don’t cower in the face of domestic violence anymore. Instead, they are more than willing to desert their violent husbands/mates. Unfortunately, in parts of Asia, women still allow that and don’t raise a hand against their partners, nor their voice against the ‘practice’. I wonder when this violence will end, when men will return their women the dignity they not only deserve but have earned over centuries. I believe, it’s men with a huge sense of inferiority that do this, not men who are real men. Festival times are not times to rejoice for all…for some they are times of torture! Nursing Shortage Causes Concern About The Future Of Healthcare

By Terry McDermott America is in the midst of a nursing shortage that is expected to get worse as baby boomers age and the need for health care increases. Complicating the nursing shortage problem is the fact that nursing schools and universities across the country are having difficulty maintaining enrollment levels that still are not sufficient to meet the projected demand for nursing care. Based on a recent survey, it is common knowledge that there is a nursing shortage and this is viewed as a serious issue. The study revealed that 75% of Americans think that the nursing shortage is a very real and very important health care concern. The general view is that the nursing shortage will have a negative effect on health care services. The poll indicates that 81 percent of the population is acutely aware of the nursing shortage and fully 65 percent believe that the nursing shortage is nearing crisis levels. The survey also found that, despite the nursing shortage most Americans are confident that nurses’ opinions on medical issues are highly credible and that the nursing profession is generally respected and admired. Because of the nursing shortage there are many more nursing positions available than can be filled. This is despite the fact that average nurse salaries match up quite well with other professions. Many potential solutions, such as travel nursing, are being developed to address the current nursing shortage. The position of travel nurse was created more than 20 years ago in order to address shortfalls in staffing in states that experienced dramatic swings in seasonal population. Now, being a travel nurse is regarded as operating in a specialized nursing category and has become a crucial factor in potential solutions to the worsening nursing shortage. Becoming a travel nurse opens the door to a world of possibilities. Agencies that specialize in travel nurse placement will help you locate a variety of travel nurse positions in areas of the U.S in which you have an interest. A travel nurse assignment will normally last for about 90 days but may continue for up to six months. After selecting the region or state you then must decide which travel nurse position you will accept. It is entirely up to you which type of program and which type of medical facility you will join on your travel nurse adventure. The compensation for a travel nurse is well above average and is attracting more nurses into the travel nurse profession. The salary or a travel nurse is well above the norm. What’s more, the travel nurse package may include complimentary housing. Plus, travel expenses may also be covered. A travel nurse will also receive generous benefits such as health insurance or a retirement plan, if they are working with a good travel nurse agency Most travel nurse assignments provide a substantial bonus upon completion of atour. The collective compensation for a travel nurse is far greater than permanent, local nursing positions. In many cases being a travel nurse can result in a six figure annual income. Considering the severe nursing shortage, a qualified nurse can fill a crucial need and be handsomely compensated for it. J. Terrence McDermott is the administrator of Travel Nurse Source, at http://www.travelnursesource.com, a resource center for the travel nurse industry. Travel Nurse Source helps identify medical staffing needs and find qualified nurses to meet those needs. Five Steps To Choosing A College

By Rich Niccolls My name is Debbie Ross. The information I have about my journey in finding a college can help both parents and students alike. Going back a few years, I was at the turning point of my life. Graduation from high school was just around the corner and I had no clue which college I was going to attend. My parents had their list of colleges that I could attend, and most of my friends were already being accepted to their college or university. With deadlines for applications approaching, I knew that I had to begin finding a college. Choosing the right college is such an important decision, and so I came up with a game plan to find a college. Here are the steps I took in choosing a college. 1. Choosing my future career The first step I took was to determine what I liked and what I did not like. I quickly ruled out being a doctor, a lawyer or a dentist. In addition, I knew there were career choices that were out of my league, such as being an architect or engineer. My high school grades proved this! Therefore after a lengthy thought process, I narrowed down my choices to Communications, Journalism, Business Management and Information Technology. My school counselor also helped me by giving me a Career Assessment Test. This revealed many of my strengths and tendencies. From this, I discovered that I was best suited for Business Management related studies. I highly recommend this. Career Assessment Surveys are not very expensive and can be found through an internet search. 2. Matching courses with colleges The next thing I did was to list the colleges and universities that offered Business Management studies and had a good track record. I used The Fiske Guide to Colleges. Within a short span of time I came up with a list of 20 colleges that I could see myself in for the next 4 years. All of these colleges had multiple specializations within my field of study, were fully accredited, and had good graduation rates with good reputations. I further narrowed my list down to 14 by selecting those universities which were located near a larger city, one of the criteria that I was looking for in my college. 3. Narrowing it down to my top five I had above average SAT scores (nothing to take me to Harvard though) and therefore had a wider selection of options for myself. Therefore, my final decision would largely be determined by the funds from my parents, any scholarships or grants, and the money I could earn through on-campus work study. I visited the web sites of each college and took virtual tours of the facilities they offered. Each had its strengths -huge libraries, modern student housing, student body size, a variety of extra curricular activities and sports, and more. I was able to narrow the list from fourteen to five based on the following criteria: going to college within 4 hours of home, my budget for college, and a smaller student body to offer a more personal approach to my education. 4. Parents and Applications Next, I got my parents involved in my decision. They had been helping me all along the way, but I needed their help in making the final, important decisions. I showed them the list of 5 colleges that I had, including details, locations, and costs. Together, we narrowed the list to three possible colleges that I could attend. They wanted a college or university which would be easy for them to visit, but would also have excellent teaching and housing facilities. The following weekend I filled out all 3 applications and mailed out them to these colleges and universities. Now it was time to wait for the response. 5. Making the final choice Within a few weeks, I had received acceptance letters from all the colleges where I sent my applications. In the end, my parents and I decided the best way to make the final decision was to visit the campuses. We took two days to visit all three campuses. Visiting the actual university was vastly different from the virtual tours. My final choice was actually rather easy. I decided on the University of Texas at Austin. The most important steps along the way for me were to take the Career Assessment Test, researching my college choices online through virtual tours, and sitting down with my parents to discuss which colleges to send applications to. This helped make my final decision easier. I hope these steps can help you in finding a college or university as you make career choices. Your Database is Your Most Important Marketing Tool

By Katrina Sawa For most small businesses, a database is the most important marketing tool. The following article discusses how to really keep track of a good database, how to systematize or automate a database marketing campaign and how to get a good prospect or mailing list. For small businesses, a database can be the most important marketing tool. It doesnt matter if contacts are kept in Outlook, ACT, Goldmine, QuickBooks, Excel or another program; what matters most is that it is kept up to date, new contacts added often, it’s easily accessible, easy to utilize mail merge functions, and easy to download. Now, if the database isn’t in a computer program, then problems come up. Its easy to overlook the value of being able to keep in touch with clients quickly. Do whatever it takes to enter contacts, business cards, emails, scraps of paper, etc. into the computer. Use Excel at the very least and build a spreadsheet. If you typing isnt enjoyable, creating a contact list might take too long. DELEGATE THIS OUT! Pay someone (a Virtual Assistant or temporary) to enter and organize the contact list. Besides, data entry does NOT make big money; Concentrate on getting more people to add to the list! Make sure to keep columns of categories, such as, ‘where you met them’, categorize as ‘hot, warm or cold prospect’, ‘client, active or non’, ‘referral source’, ‘vendor’ or other form. This way its easy to pull out mailing lists to separate groups. Each group will need different messages created specifically to that groups needs. Prospects need sales type messages, clients need additional services and/or touchy-feely messages, referral sources need to be asked for referrals and to know about new services. How to find a good Mailing List. We always recommend using a Direct Mail List Company and happy clients are pleased with the resources provided. Typical lists cost about $100 per 1000 names, however the more criteria added, such as demographic or psychographic info, the cost goes up a bit; sometimes as high as $300 per 1000. Lists can come in Microsoft Excel format and can be emailed for the fastest turnaround. Depending upon delivery method, it could take up to 2 business days. Excel is the standard format and is can be easily used for a data source in a mail merge. For one client, Bellissima Imported Shoes in Roseville, California, they acquired a list of women age 30-60 who lived in Roseville, CA or Granite Bay, CA AND had shopped for shoes in the last 3 months!! That’s a huge target market!! Bellissima is doing well; please visit them at www.bellissimaimportedshoes.com. Lists exist for almost any target market, such as, attorneys, school administrators, age groups, income or geographic areas (almost anything you can imagine). It’s a great way to increase a database quickly, although it is recommend that networking in person is best method for obtaining a contact list. Really, meeting and connecting in person, then adding them to a database provides more ways to market by mail, email, phone, etc. Not to mention, more referrals and business to come back around! How to Systematize or Automate Your Database Marketing It is highly recommended that signing up for and using an email marketing program of some sort as an effective tool for quick and consistent contact with your list. Below is a short list of email marketing tools. www.constantcontact.com www.emailbrain.com www.bluehornet.com www.exacttarget.com www.ezinedirector.com Email marketing can be free (except for the low fees associated with the previously mentioned email marketing companies). K. Sawa Marketing uses Constant Contact because its easy to manage, easy to create templates, upload logos and photos and include links, etc. Plus, they track every email that goes out, who opens them, who clicks through to the website, opt ins/outs, etc. Love it! It is recommended to email to the contact list or database at least once a month; however, twice a month or more may be needed to promote your products and services online. To find out how to avoid mistakes in Email Newsletter Campaigns, email ezinereport@ksawamarketing.com for a REPORT: The Top 5 Mistakes People Make in Their Email Marketing. Adding Direct Mail for certain types of businesses make sense. In a tough market like Real Estate, Mortgage, Insurance or Financial Services more consistent mailings (i.e. monthly mailings) are important to stay in front of the client. Whats important with mailings is sending something of value. Make sure to send items and information that the clients want to know about. YOUR MESSAGE IS THE KEY TO SUCCESS! Making mailings automatic can be as simple as designing a campaign of 6-12 postcards or letters all at one time, setting up the printing to be done at a mail house or printer. Every month email the mail house or printer the updated list and they take care of the rest. Plan mailings in advance, not only will it save money but it will make the message more targeted and planned out for specific times of year, holidays, special sales, etc. Last minute campaigns create stress. Trying to put together a mailer each month in between appointments, late nights and everywhere in between will likely result in a poor quality piece with unclear messages, and worse, forgetting about branding. Missing important ways people instantly recognize or differentiate from another business could lead to missed sales and profits. Finally, if managing all the details isnt working JUST DELEGATE IT! Hire a graphic designer and/or marketing company who can design marketing pieces and coordinate your mailings. Then, hire an assistant or Virtual Assistant to manage and update contact lists each month. It will save money in the long run! ========================================================= PERMISSION TO REPRINT: This article may be reprinted provided it appears in its entirety with the following attribution: Katrina Sawa, Small Biz Marketing Expert and Founder of K. Choosing the Right Beading Needle

By Renee Flowers Although presumably you can use any kind of needle as a beading needle, if you are serious about the craft you should buy one that is specifically for beading. These types of needles are designed for both simple beading and elaborate beading, and they come in all different sizes and materials. For serious beaders, the types of needles they use can make the difference between a good finished product and one that is anywhere from slightly to very inferior. To get your needles, visit a craft store, or even better, a beading store. A beading store will have exactly the types of needles that you need for your specific projects and designs, and the people there should be able to help you find the right beading needle for each of your projects. Dont be afraid to go in and ask questions; these people want your business, and if they give you the right kind of help the first time, they know that youll be back when you need more supplies. Although it may seem strange to you at first, wooden needles often work very well for beading, and well-made wooden needles can last a long time. A stainless steel beading needle can work well too it really all depends on your preferences. If you are just starting out but are serious about your beading craft, you may want to buy more than one type of beading needle, so that you know that youll have the right one for each project that you will be working on. Interested in Botanical Crohns Relief?

By Sharon Dobson Botanical crohns treatment is often used as an alternative or complimentary treatment to medications. Since ancient times, plants have been used for their healing properties. However, not all plants provide the same relief or can be used as a remedy for any health problem. With that in mind, the following are the botanical treatments most used by Crohns sufferers for relief of symptoms. Aloe Vera Juice aloe vera juice, which comes from the aloe vera plant, has natural healing abilities and also acts as a detoxifier. Aloe vera juice is ingested and works to gently and thoroughly cleanse the bowel. The juice goes through the intestinal tract and works to break apart food residues that are impacted within the intestines. Aloe vera juice is a good botanical crohns remedy because it helps to alleviate constipation, prevents recurrent diarrhea, reduces bloating and discomfort, and promotes regular bowel movements. It is considered a safe treatment to use for those who monitor their diets, and can be used for the long term. It has no known negative side effects. Slippery Elm Bark slippery elm bark comes from the slippery elm tree, and can be dried and ground into a powder or ground into gruel. It is usually made into a tea or added to porridge. It is considered an effective herb for soothing the entire digestive tract. This is because the bark has anti-inflammatory properties as one of its ingredients is mucilage, which resists digestion and hydrolysis via enzymes and stomach acids. Therefore, slippery elm bark sooths the digestive system and also acts as an antioxidant. It helps the body recover its vital hormone balance that is needed to maintain basic health. It is considered safe, but should be ingested with plenty of water to prevent an impacted bowel situation from occurring (difficulty passing dry hardened feces from the bowel). Chamomile Chamomile is a flower and can be used for botanical crohns relief. It is often dried and prepared in a tea. It helps to aid in digestion, and has sedative properties. Moreover, chamomile can alleviate gastrointestinal spasms and other common symptoms associated with inflammatory diseases that affect the gastrointestinal track such as Crohns disease. This is because Chamomile works as an anti-inflammatory agent. Chamomile is considered safe, but should not be taken by a person who has an allergy to any flower in the daisy family. Peppermint Peppermint is a plant, and its leaves are often dried and used in the form of tea as an herbal remedy. Peppermint has been used for centuries to treat common digestive problems such as reducing gas production within the intestines. However, another way of taking peppermint is peppermint oil (oil that has been infused with peppermint properties which it takes from the leaves). Studies have found that peppermint oil in coated capsules is exceptionally effective for relieving painful symptoms, distention and frequent bowel movement for those who suffer from Irritable bowel syndrome. Crohns sufferers may also receive the same relief, but more information is needed to see how effective peppermint oil would be as a botanical Crohns treatment. Peppermint tea is considered safe, but peppermint oil can have adverse side effects such as a burning sensation in the stomach or rectum if not taken as advised. All of these herbs can be found in local herbal and health stores. You should read and follow the instructions as directed on the bottle. In addition, keep in mind that you should exercise caution if you are using botanical remedies as a form of crohns disease treatment. Although the herbs may indeed provide you some relief of your symptoms, herbs have not been regulated to the same degree as medications, nor has their effectiveness for treating Crohns Disease been thoroughly studied. Furthermore, if you are taking medications to treat your condition, be advised that some herbal remedies may interact with certain medications and not be compatible. Thus, its a good idea for you to first speak to your doctor about botanical crohns treatments if you plan on taking them, especially if you are already using medication. The Top 10 Ways to Market your Business or Professional Practice Without Advertising

By Philip E. Humbert Every business and professional practice MUST be in the public eye. You need customers! Folks need your goods and services — it’s a mutual alliance for mutual benefit! But if potential clients and customers don’t know you exist, or can’t find you, you will go bankrupt! They won’t benefit from your services, and you won’t make any money. So, marketing is a necessity. Advertising is one form of marketing, but it’s terribly expensive. Here are the Top 10 alternatives: 1. Contact 5 past customers or referral sources to thank them for their business and ask them to evaluate the quality of your service. Let them know they are the most important part of your research and development program. Listen to their suggestions! 2. Re-do your business cards, brochures or letterhead. Up-date your slogans, be certain your use of colors, textures and headlines is appropriate and represents precisely the image you want to convey. Hire a graphic designer. Dont skimp on your first impression! 3. Announce a new program, new products, new hours, new personnel or new policies. So long as it is real and improves the quality and level of your service, this is news that customers, clients and the media will want to know about. 4. Attend and participate in networking opportunities. From business open-houses to neighborhood picnics, to greeting people youve done business with when you see them around town, always look for ways to remind people of who you are and the services and benefits you provide. 5. Cooperate with other organizations to achieve name and brand recognition you couldnt achieve on your own. Sponsor a local softball team, join with a radio station to sponsor a contest, or participate in a charity golf tournament. Partnerships can bring huge rewards! 6. Offer a seminar, class or workshop. Local news media will often cover an interesting topic, and its a great way to make people aware of your services. Charge little or no admission, have great handouts and materials, and get a crowd together. 7. Use direct mail. Typically, we think of this as “junk mail” going to thousands of people, but more often its a matter of using your word processor to write a personal letter to 200 past customers, colleagues, or even competitors. Make it interesting, personal, and remind them of your special niche or unique services. Include a coupon or certificate. Make sure your direct mail is not “junk”! 8. Form an alliance with your suppliers, colleagues or (even) your competitors to offer a “combo” package that neither of you could offer alone and share the marketing expenses. Attorneys and accountants can offer compelling packages. A massage therapist might pair with a Chiropractor, a gym, or a weight-loss program. Who can you team up with? 9. Review everything a potential customer sees or hears when they do business with you. How do you answer your phone? Do your signs needs re-painting, is your lobby attractive and comfortable? Is your desk a mess? Do you take pride in your appearance and take time to make clients comfortable? Its all in the details! 10. Re-submit your web page to at least 5 search engines this week. Each search engine has its own rules and you dont want to flood them, but it is wise to up-date your listing at least every few months. Five Tips For Garden Sanctuaries

By Robin Mastro The design of your garden has an amazing affect on your familys health and well-being. Here is how you can create harmony in your gardenwhich is considered a living entityand bring peace and happiness within your home. Vastu Shastra is an environmental science written about some 7,000 10,000 years ago in India by rishis, or men of great wisdom. They observed the workings of Nature and recorded how different rays of the sun, the magnetic poles, the makeup of the land, soil, slope, structures, etc. affected all living things. It is the oldest recorded architectural treatise known to man and it is from this science that some of the worlds most enduring structures have been created. According to the science of Vastu Shastra, all five elements (earth, water, fire, air and space) need to be in harmony. When a seed is planted, it requires that all five elements be balanced for a seed to germinate, sprout and become a strong, healthy plant. The disproportion of any one element whether it is the quality of the earth (soil ph), the amount and quality of water, wind (air), sun (fire), or the amount of space it is planted inwill inhibit its growth. In this way a wise gardener sets up a balanced environment for his plants to grow free from disease and stress. Briefly, each area of your garden is associated with one of the five elements. The earth element is associated with the southwest area of your garden and creates a sustaining and grounding force. In the northeast, the water element is at home. This element allows plants to flourish. The fire element in the southeast supports disease-free plants. The northwest is related to the air element encouraging cross-pollination. The space element is associated with the central area of your garden, enhancing the flow of beneficial influences that nourishes the other elements. Positive magnetic energies coming from the north and the positive solar energies coming from the east promote harmony and balance. Here are five great steps you can use to bring the five elements into balance within your garden and make it a sanctuary that is not only beautiful to look and wonderful to spend time in, but will actually have an empowering affect on the health and well-being of you and your family. 1. Build up the southwest area of your garden to produce the stabilizing force of the earth element. You can do this with a rock garden, tall trees and even a stone statue. This will help to collect and hold the positive solar and magnetic energies coming from the east and north. Since yellow is the color associated with the southwest, choose daffodils, roses or wisteria to accentuate this area. This is also a good place for a storage or tool shed. 2. Represent the water element by using low plantings in the northeast that will allow the flow of positive solar energy. Add a fountain or reflection pool or pond in this area to reflect this beneficial energy throughout the garden. Herbs, white pansies or geraniums can be used as accents. 3. Add a barbeque or a fire pit in the southeast as your fire element. Red symbolizes this direction so plant tulips, geraniums and dahlias here. 4. Use wind chimes to balance the air element in the northwest. Since blue is the color of this area, plant bluebells, forget-me-nots and iris to enhance the influences coming from this direction. 5. Represent the space element by an open area in the middle of you garden. It can either be a patio or grass. Finally, by keeping your garden neat and tidy you will be maintaining balance and attracting the positive influence of each of the directions. A well-designed and tended garden, using the principles of Vastu Shastra, will benefit you and all the members of your family for years to come. By reconnecting with the natural balance inherent in the environment, you will encourage better personal health, improve the quality of relationships and enhance well-being.
